Heritage Volunteers

The Arts Society Heritage Volunteers give their time to care for collections, record documents and act as guides and stewards.

They are committed non-specialist volunteers who work under the guidance of curators and other professionals to help conserve our heritage. They work in:

  • Museums
  • National Trust Properties
  • Historic Houses
  • Libraries
  • Gardens

The Arts Society Harpenden Evening is currently working at Shaw’s Corner in Ayot St Lawrence – the home of the playwright George Bernard Shaw.

The house has been closed over winter for essential conservation/research work and is due to open in late February 2019. During this time our wonderful volunteers have been helping behind the scenes with various jobs; e.g. cataloguing and checking the house contents, cleaning precious objects, inputing data etc. This work is now finished as the visitor season starts, but will resume in the autumn. In the meantime our  volunteers often take on new roles in the house, kiosk and garden, and even help with summer play reading and outdoor events.

Watch this space if you are interested in gardening, as the garden will soon need tidying and putting back how it was in Shaw's time. More information soon.

This is an exciting, ongoing project for TASHE and will be of interest to all who wish to learn more about early 20th century life and the work of George Bernard Shaw.

Training and support will be given by the enthusiastic staff of Shaw’s. Additional training can also be supplied by The Arts Society, London
