Heritage Volunteers

The Arts Society Heritage Volunteers give their time to care for collections, record documents and act as guides and stewards.

They are committed non-specialist volunteers who work under the guidance of curators and other professionals to help conserve our heritage. They work in:

  • Museums
  • National Trust Properties
  • Historic Houses
  • Libraries
  • Gardens

The Arts Society Harpenden Evening is currently working at Shaw’s Corner in Ayot St Lawrence – the home of the playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Some of our members have been volunteering at the house over the summer, as guides and front of house, play readers and general helpers. Last winter we were engaged with conservation work, when our wonderful volunteers helped behind the scenes with various jobs; e.g. cataloguing and checking the house contents, cleaning precious objects, inputting data etc. and next winter we hope to include work on cataloguing Shaw’s book collection. This summer, work has also begun on the garden. The original layout has been researched and the new gardener and helpers are making an impact. We are also thinking of writing a Memory Trail. This would use the senses to prompt memories and discussion, as visitors wander round the house and gardens.

Work at Shaw’s Corner is an exciting, ongoing project for TASHE and will be of interest to all who wish to help preserve a time capsule of early 20th century life, while learning about and helping to preserve the work of George Bernard Shaw. Helping the National Trust also brings its own rewards for volunteers preserving our heritage.
